About Darby

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Red/Golden/Orange/Chestnut with White
  • Housetrained: No
Darby is a 5 yr old red & white male originally rescued from a high kill shelter in Meigs county. He was adopted but returned after several months because his family felt he was too high energy for their lifestyle. Darby is friendly with the other bassets, but enjoys his people attention more. He will happily roll over for a belly rub and enjoys burying himself in his bedding. Willie has been living in a foster home and they have nothing but great things to say about him. He doesn't chew or destroy things, and likes the couch and our bed. He's a very happy and fun guy, he has started to play with toys and tried to get our other dog to play with him, so he is really a sociable guy too. No bad habits that we can see, though he can be a bit of a whiner (aka begger) when we eat in front of him, but he keeps his distance and will eventually give up if you just ignore him. No food aggression issues, likes to walk on the leash, and knows some basic commands 'sit', 'speak' and house broken. The two most important things for Darby are daily long walks other dogs in the house that are sweet, playful and energetic. Walks in hot weather will have to be short and slow because he cannot tolerate the heat. He should be walked with a harness rather than just a collar. He will pull hard if he sees another dog he wants to visit with. He definitely needs a fenced in yard. We have no kids in the house, but he has been very gentle with all small children and babies that he meets on walks. He is sometimes leery about teenagers. Sometimes we sprinkle a tiny bit of parmesan cheese over his dinner. It’s all about the smell. Show him the cheese shaker and ask him if he wants some cheese and he will say please and do a happy dance. Every few nights we give him about ½ cup of plain non-fat yogurt for dessert after his meal. Say to him “Would you like some yogurt?” and he won’t hesitate on his answer. He LOVES belly rubs. Loves playing tug and take-away with his stuffed duck. But he doesn’t really like it when you squeak it. Darby is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccines and on a flea/heart worm preventative. To learn more about Darby please fill out our adoption application on our website.
